Yayasan Penyu Indonesia held the first Training of Trainer (ToT) in Berau, East Kalimantan, as a training platform for sea turtle conservation leaders in Indonesia. The program ran for two weeks, from September 16 to 29, 2024. Participants included program coordinators and managers working on sea turtle nesting beaches in Berau, Simeulue, Nias, and Sipora.
The ToT presentation materials were designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of sea turtles and conservation efforts. The training began with an introduction to basic sea turtle biology and history, an overview of the seven sea turtle species in the world, and identification guides to distinguish each species. The sessions also addressed various threats faced by sea turtles in Indonesian waters.
Participants then delved into sea turtle conservation topics, including legal protections in Indonesia, the role of international agreements such as CITES, and the importance of conservation in maintaining ecosystem balance. The training also involved hands-on fieldwork, allowing participants to engage directly in sea turtle protection activities in their natural habitats.
Practical sessions took place on Mataha Island and Bilang-Bilangan Island. These areas are critically important, as they form part of the Coral Triangle and serve as the largest habitat for green sea turtles in Indonesia, as well as feeding grounds for hawksbill sea turtles.
All participants were encouraged to become trainers themselves and to pass on the knowledge they gained during the ToT to their respective program teams. Through this Training of Trainer initiative, Yayasan Penyu Indonesia also aims to promote gender equality by providing equal opportunities for both men and women to learn, contribute, and lead in sea turtle conservation efforts.
Jobs such as being a ranger in sea turtle conservation are often considered unsuitable for women due to the demanding work environment, physical field requirements, and remote locations. However, we believe that everyone can contribute to strengthening sea turtle protection in Indonesia. Everyone has the right to realize their potential in preserving and sustaining nature.
Training of Trainer I is the initial introduction. Yayasan Penyu Indonesia will continue with two more ToTs to complete the training series for participants. This program is funded by the UK Government through the Darwin Initiative, aimed at strengthening the capability and capacity of Yayasan Penyu Indonesia in protecting sea turtles and their habitats in Indonesia.
