Sea turtles in Indonesia face numerous threats that put their survival at risk, including egg poaching, habitat destruction, climate change, and the illegal trade of turtle-based products such as shells, meat, and eggs. These threats are often tied to the livelihoods of coastal communities that depend on marine resources. That’s why YPI believes sea turtle conservation cannot succeed without directly involving and empowering local communities.
In some coastal areas, people still rely on sea turtle eggs and meat as a source of income. However, YPI is committed to providing sustainable economic alternatives. We strive to help communities find profitable opportunities that do not rely on exploiting sea turtles or other marine resources.
Through workshops and training programs, YPI equips communities with knowledge on eco-friendly economic practices, such as seaweed farming and waste management initiatives that generate economic value. We also collaborate with local communities to create opportunities that improve their well-being while protecting the environment.
At YPI, we believe that human well-being and environmental conservation must go hand in hand. With this inclusive approach, we are dedicated to building a future where both sea turtles and coastal communities can thrive together.
