Here is a video showing how a female turtle digs its nest.

In the nesting process, it can be observed that:

  • The female turtle digs the nest without using its eyes (no visual supervision).
  • The body part used for digging is the back flippers.
  • The process involves the left back flipper scooping sand from the hole, while the right back flipper throws the sand far away to the front or side (depending on the species of turtle). The loggerhead and olive ridley turtles tend to throw sand towards the front, while the green turtle throws it to the side.
  • When laying eggs, the green turtle covers the nest hole using both of its back flippers. Meanwhile, the loggerhead and olive ridley turtles do not cover the nest at all.
