Images of currency often represent a nation’s key aspects. Did you know that the Rp20.000 note you frequently hold features the Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas)? This sea turtle symbolizes the rich natural heritage of Derawan, Berau, East Kalimantan.

While the presence of sea turtles in our country is a blessing, it also places the responsibility on us to protect them. Unfortunately, these majestic creatures continue to face threats that could push them toward extinction.

Green Turtle Smuggling Case in Bali

On January 12, 2025, a smuggling attempt involving 29 green turtles was uncovered in Bali. These sea turtles, aged between 10 and 50 years, were at a critical age for reproduction, essential for maintaining their population. While the smuggling attempt was foiled, five sea turtles were found dead. Many of the surviving sea turtles, although released back into the ocean, remain vulnerable to poaching and habitat destruction.

The illegal trade of sea turtles in Indonesia remains rampant. They are often exploited for jewelry, accessories, consumption, and profit-driven sales. This irresponsible exploitation poses a grave threat to their survival, jeopardizing the sustainability of their population.

The Green Turtle’s Reflection on Rupiah

Though the green turtle graces our currency, its value far exceeds the monetary figure it represents. These sea turtles play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems. They regulate jellyfish populations and sustain coral reef health by grazing on excessive algae. Their presence signifies the harmony of our oceans. Without them, the delicate balance of the marine food chain could collapse, causing widespread ecological repercussions.

Awareness and tangible actions are urgently needed to protect sea turtles from extinction. Through sustainable conservation efforts and strict law enforcement, we can ensure that green turtles remain a vital part of Indonesia’s biodiversity.

Let us protect the green turtles so that they remain more than just an image on our currency—they deserve to live peacefully in the oceans they call home and continue to glide gracefully through the vast blue oceans, embodying the vibrant spirit and harmony of Indonesia’s marine life!
