Protecting Sea Turtles by Respecting Nature
Yayasan Penyu Indonesia is committed to protecting sea turtles and their habitats through an approach that prioritizes natural processes. Intervention is carried out only when truly necessary, allowing sea turtles to maintain their natural life cycles, behaviors, and ability to survive in the wild.
One of our regular conservation activities is beach patrol and beach clean-up. These efforts help remove obstacles from nesting beaches, both for turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs and for turtles making their way back to the sea after nesting.
However, not every obstacle can be avoided. Large pieces of driftwood and fallen tree trunks carried ashore by ocean currents can become natural barriers that are difficult to remove.
When a Sea Turtle Gets Trapped in Driftwood
In Berau, for example, our team has repeatedly encountered green turtles trapped among large pieces of driftwood. In most cases, turtles are first given the opportunity to overcome the obstacle on their own.
Some turtles are able to find their way through and return to the sea without assistance. This is important because the ability to navigate and overcome obstacles is part of their natural behavior in the wild.
However, some turtles continue trying to get past an obstacle without success. If this continues for too long, they can become exhausted and may be at risk of dehydration.
It is in situations like these that intervention becomes necessary.
Providing Just Enough Assistance
When a turtle is found to be unable to overcome an obstacle on its own, our team provides the minimum assistance needed. The goal is not to take over the natural process, but simply to help free the turtle from the obstacle preventing it from reaching the sea.
Once the turtle has been freed and is in suitable condition, it is allowed to return safely to the ocean and continue its life in its natural habitat.
This approach is an important part of conservation: helping when necessary, while still giving nature the space to take its course.
If You Encounter a Sea Turtle in the Wild
A sea turtle encountered in the wild is carrying out an important part of its natural life cycle. For this reason, unnecessary interaction should always be avoided.
Give turtles enough space to move and continue their natural behavior calmly. Do not touch, chase, block, or alter a turtle’s direction of movement unless there is a genuine need to intervene.
If you see a turtle encountering an obstacle, observe the situation first. The turtle may still be capable of overcoming it on its own. Assistance should only be provided when there is a clear indication that the turtle is in need of help.
Conservation is not always about doing more. Sometimes, the best protection is knowing when to help—and when to give nature the space to take its course.
Through minimal and appropriate intervention, we can help keep sea turtles safe while allowing them to remain wild, independent, and free to live their lives in the natural environment.
