On December 4, 2024, the Indonesian Sea Turtle Foundation (YPI) team visited SDN 001 Balikukup Island, Berau, East Kalimantan, and had the opportunity to engage in a fun learning session about sea turtle conservation. The children were enthusiastic as they learned about sea turtles through storytelling and interactive flashcard games.
Balikukup Island is a crucial feeding ground for Green Turtle due to its seagrass beds, making turtle education highly important to raise awareness about these rare and protected species. In addition to turtle conservation, the session also covered waste management to help the children become more mindful and responsible for the waste they produce.
This initiative aims to inspire children to take part in preserving the ocean, a habitat for sea turtles and countless other marine creatures. To measure the children’s knowledge and how much they learned from the session, the YPI team conducted pre-tests and post-tests.
The YPI team also visited the Balikukup Floating Library, where they donated educational books about turtles.
